Lifeworks is a nonprofit passionately committed to fostering a greater understanding of people with disabilities so that they are heard, their interests respected, and their contributions valued. When approached to design a Donor Recognition wall, we pursued the talents and contributions of the clients that they nurture. The facility has an art instructor who works with their participants with glass. They own a kiln for slumping and have created decorations and ornaments in the past.

After initial brainstorming with the design team, the clients of Lifeworks created organic, slumped glass shapes of birds, butterflies, flowers, and leaves (sizes and shapes were determined by the design team to fit the overall support structure). Color combinations, shapes within the main shape, and simplicity or complexity of the design were the choices of the Lifeworks participants. These were created as backgrounds for the donor names recognizing the Capital Campaign donors at their new suburban facility.

In addition, a duplicate shape was made as a gift to the donor. At the unveiling event, everyone received a memento that matched their shape on the permanent display as a thanks for their donation.

Once the glass was slumped, a pattern of the shapes was determined by the design team, and donor names were then installed onto the face of the glass pieces. Finally, these were installed onto 1” deep formed and floating satin aluminum bars – with uniquely sized individual stars for primary donor levels, the Lifeworks ‘vision’ words, and a ‘level key’ to complement the full installation.

The display is a source of pride and ownership for the clients of Lifeworks. There are many photos taken with the creators of the glass pieces and the donor whose name exists on that tile… always with a wide grin of pride and happiness at their creativity.
