Macalester College Selects VCI for Wayfinding Signage Assignment

By Richard Lang

Macalester College, nestled in a lovely, residential neighborhood–minutes from downtown St. Paul and Minneapolis – has selected Visual Communications to design and provide effective college and city “Esprit de corps” at Macalester is Engagement

At Macalester, the “esprit de corps” of the campus is engagement – of ideas and action towards a more just and responsible world. This spirit is reflected through the fact that more than 90 percent of students participate in some form of community-based work before they graduate. The many notable alumni that go out into the world and make a positive impact display this spirit.

Visual Communications will begin the design process by evaluating the existing wayfinding signage using a photo and GPS survey of the campus. This step provides a baseline for future work. The VCI team will then meet with key campus personnel and students to gather different perspectives and formulate a list of signage problems to be addressed. Similar college projects completed by the VCI team will provide key wayfinding strategies for good insight as to what will and will not work on the Macalester campus. Lastly, the Visual Communications team will review relevant city codes that could affect signage placed on campus property. All of the aforementioned criteria will provide the foundation for the Visual Communications team to design an effective college and city wayfinding signage system that will assist first time visitors, current residents, and returning alumni.

Finally, Macalester’s focus on internationalism and multiculturalism has inspired Visual Communications to design a unique system that incorporates the tradition and prestige of this highly accredited college.
